IMPROVEMENTS FROM HIEROWORDS 3

The program has been substantially improved since the last released version (3.4.7) a few ears ago. As you can see it's now a more powerful and efficient computerized dictionary than ever! If you have used version 3, make sure to take a look at its new features. I'd like to thank all the numerous users that have provided comments, suggestions, ideas and constructive criticisms throughout the years. 

Improved search capabilities:

  • Possibility to prepend and/or append a space to the searched word (meaning) to restrict the result of the search
  • Added the option to search for “Exact Word” (not the same as "exact match")
  • Added the "Find Previous" function
  • Added the use of wild-cards (“*” and “?”)
  • Added the “Ignore variants” option to the Gardiner notation search, so that now searching for A1, will also find A1a, A1b etc.

New Tools

  • Added a Progress Bar to the Main form to indicate the position of the current word in the dictionary
  • Added a cute graphic toolbar, for easy access to the most common commands
  • Added the Keyboard tool, which displays a handy on-screen keyboard with transliteration keys for input in transliteration fields.

New Functions


  • Added the Shuffle function.
  • Added the possibility to delete any glyph selected when composing or editing a word.
  • Added the possibility to delete the last glyph selected when composing or editing a word.
  • Added the “Flip Left” and “ Flip Right” to set the direction of a word
  • Added a “Flip All” function to change direction of all the words in a database
  • Added the “New Dictionary” command to allow the creation of a new dictionary from scratch
  • Added the capability of copying the current word to the clipboard as an image, to be pasted in a graphic program or word processor.
  • Added the capability of saving the hieroglyphic word as a BMP Image

Improved Program Behavior:

  • Extended the maximum number of words from 32,000 to 100,000! (Thanks to Mark Vygus who pointed it out and who is the only one who could possibly insert more than 32,000 words!)
  • Added the possibility to launch Hierowords directly by double clicking on one of its dictionaries
  • Added Program Version in the About menu and on Main form Bar
  • Hierowords now saves the preferences so the program remembers them next time is run
  • Changed the extension of dictionaries to .hwd (HieroWords Dictionary) to avoid confusion with generic .csv files
  • Added the possibility to skip the “About” windows when launching the program..
  • Added the capability to resize the 'Compose' form manually to accommodate long words
  • The Main form now re sizes automatically to accommodate long words.

Improved functions

  • Improved the Transliteration Table by adding the possibility to switch between Egyptological and (Latin) Alphabetical order
  • Implemented a different, much faster, Sorting Algorithm
  • Modified the “Gardiner Notation” sort algorithm to account for the numeric portion (i.e. Now A12 comes after A2).
  • Fixed once and for all the “Flip” function, to change direction of a word.
  • Improved Cut/Copy/Insert Paste to allow transferring words across different instances (dictionaries) of Hierowords
  • Many Cosmetic and stability improvements
